The Smart Account (Pond)
The term "smart account" generally refers to a smart contract that holds funds on behalf of a specific user. A Pond is Pondora's unique implementation of a smart account — derived from a public key, it acts as a smart extension that adds programmability to a standard wallet. Your Pond address works just like a regular address: you can send and receive funds directly to it. Your keys, your custody, your control — now with the ability to express complex DeFi intents.
Regular Cardano dApps have historically forced a choice between programmability and self-custody. To interact with a protocol you typically send your assets to a script address controlled by that protocol. While your funds sit there, you cannot use them for anything else — they are locked into a single path. If that path fails to execute, you pay transaction fees to cancel and start over, missing other opportunities in the meantime.
Pondora's Smart Account is designed to remove this trade-off. Your assets stay at your address, under your control. Instead of sending funds to a protocol, you sign intents — declarative rules that describe the conditions under which a protocol may use your assets. The assets are designed to remain in your account until the conditions you specified are met.
This fundamentally changes the DeFi experience — enabling what we call SmartFi: the evolution from simple, isolated DeFi transactions to complex, automated financial workflows, all on a decentralized, secure backbone.
